SR&ED
SR&ED is the largest program, not the only one. Several others stack with it, and the stacking rules matter.
Founders often treat innovation funding as a single line item. In practice there is a layered landscape of federal and provincial credits, grants and contribution programs, and the interactions between them affect what each one is worth.
The stacking rule that catches people
Government assistance generally reduces the expenditure base for SR&ED. A grant that covers salary can reduce the credit on that same salary. Stacking is not forbidden, it just has to be planned, and the sequencing of applications matters.
Once a year, map your planned technical work against the program landscape and pick at most two to pursue seriously. Grant applications are real work with real opportunity cost, and a half-finished application is worth nothing. Treat SR&ED as the baseline you always claim, and everything else as selective.

A short call is usually enough to tell you whether there is anything here worth acting on.
